“I never should have let him do it.” With a moan, I slap my hands over my eyes.

“Don’t be such a baby.” Kasia prises my fingers off my face, forcing me to look at her impatient scowl. “You did let him do it, so the least you can do is watch him die.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“Sorry. I didn’t realise you wanted me to lie about it.” She rearranges her features into a fake smile. “Rys will be fine. How’s that? Better?”

I give her a withering look. “Much better.”

“Enough, you two.” Lorant points up, his other hand shading his eyes. “There they are! They’re coming back around. And they both have riders, so Rys hasn’t fallen off yet.”

Crouched beside me, Demon peers into the sky, and his jaw drops. “The Dziwak is in front!”

“You don’t have to sound quite so amazed,” I grumble before his words fully register with me. “Wait. He is?” Jumping to my feet, my gaze locks onto the two black dots high above us, and my heart vaults into my throat. “He is!”

“You don’t have to sound quite so amazed,” Kasia mocks me softly, but she takes my hand in hers and squeezes it tight. “Come on. You should be there when he lands.”

She tries to pull me down the steep slope and I grind my heels into the dirt. “I can see better from here. If anything goes wrong…”

“If anything goes wrong, you won’t be able to do any more for him up here. And whatever the outcome, he’ll want you at the finish with him. So stop making excuses.”

She yanks me forward with so much force my feet leave drag marks on the ground.

“How did you get to be so heartless with that wholesome, sheltered upbringing of yours?” I ask with a trace of bitterness.

“Boring. You forgot boring.” She gives me another brutal tug. “That’s why. Now move your poverty-stricken, care-deprived, conflict-avoidant ass.”

“Absolutely ruthless,” I mutter, but I let her lead me down, and Lorant follows closely behind.

With a scattering of stones, Demon skids ahead of us, racing to join the crowd that’s already gathering at the finish.

I grimace. “That boy has a disturbing lust for witnessing bloodshed.”

Kasia shrugs. “That’s probably the least worrying thing about him. I’d be more concerned about him causing the bloodshed if I were you.”

“He’s only a child,” Lorant protests.

I pause to glance at him with a grateful smile.

“Plenty of time for that later,” he adds.

I glower at both of them. “No wonder you two chose each other.”

By the time we reach the designated landing place, we have to fight our way through the excited mob. The unruly spectators, some of them already chanting my husband’s name, are ignoring the denhands’ timid requests for order. With that sort of behaviour, they’re simply begging to be crushed under an incoming dragon.

Lorant moves to take control. “Tamers! Link arms and form a barrier! Keep this circle clear. Don’t let anybody in.”

They obey his command, forcing the heaving rabble back. Lorant
